Thomas Castillo, D.O., is a board-certified ophthalmologist who treats medical and surgical diseases of the eye, including cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Common procedures performed by Castillo include cataract surgery, intravitreal injections for wet macular degeneration, laser surgeries for glaucoma and secondary cataracts and eyelid surgeries. He also cares for infections of the eyes and eyelids.

“Ophthalmology was the best medical field for me because of the diversity of conditions I’m able to treat,” Dr. Castillo said. “I believe what defines a physician is compassion, and my goal is to provide complete and compassionate care for all of my patients, utilizing all of my God-given talents.”

Dr. Castillo’s interest in medicine was sparked at 12 years old when he became acquainted with a boy with leukemia as he recovered from a surgery. When he learned there was nothing that could be done for the boy, he decided he wanted to become a doctor to help kids like his new friend.

“I love talking to people, and it’s the personal interaction that I enjoy the most,” Dr. Castillo said. “I love taking care of and getting to know families. I take pride in my commitment to providing the latest in quality eye care for my patients.”

Dr. Castillo earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology at Loyola University in Chicago and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Castillo also has a Master of Business Administration from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa.

Dr. Castillo enjoys music and was in a rock band in the 1960s. He plays guitar and keyboards and participates in his church praise team. He also enjoys acting and teaching medical students and ophthalmology residents.
