  What is Joint Replacement Surgery?
Joint pain may be caused when cartilage has worn away and bone rubs against bone. Total joint replacement becomes an option when joint pain is severe and interferes with your daily activities. The decision to have joint replacement surgery should be made by you, your primary care provider and an orthopedic surgeon.

Both traditional joint replacement surgery - for hips, knees, shoulders, and ankles - and hip resurfacing are performed at Beaver Dam Community Hospitals by our experienced, board-certified orthopedic surgeons. Our state-of-the-art surgery center is equipped with advanced technology for surgery and joint replacement prosthetics.

Why Visit Our Joint Replacement Team?
At BDCH, we have an outstanding team of health professionals working together to provide excellent, comprehensive care. Your joint replacement team includes:
  • Orthopedic surgeon
  • Surgery Center staff
  • Nurses experienced in orthopedics
  • Physical and occupational therapists skilled in rehabilitation following joint replacement
  • Discharge planning nurses knowledgeable in area resources and continued care service
Advanced Treatments Designed for Each Individual
Many new orthopedic techniques are available at Beaver Dam Community Hospital. Innovations such as minimal incision joint replacement, gender specific knee replacement and computer assisted joint replacement generate a lot of media attention, and each has a role in the treatment of some bone and joint problems.

The application of every technique is evaluated and individualized for each patient. The orthopedic surgeons at BDCH are the right choice for your surgery and the best source of information about which orthopedic techniques are best for your condition.
Experience, Skill, Teamwork Highlights BDCH Team
Joint replacement is one of the most common orthopedic surgeries performed each year at BDCH and in the United States. At BDCH, we have an integrated approach to joint replacement, with your surgeon working closely with the nursing, physical therapy and pharmacy staff throughout your surgery and recovery process.

Each member of the team has experience in caring for patients after joint replacement and is dedicated to your safe recovery. Recovery time and return to work will vary with each patient.

"I advise patients to clear their schedule for three months following joint replacement and use the time to concentrate on recovery," BDCH orthopedic surgeon Bert C. Callahan, M.D. said.

For the best information, discuss your particular situation with your orthopedic surgeon.

What is Hip Resurfacing?
Hip resurfacing is a surgical alternative to total hip replacement. Hip resurfacing does not require the femur bone to be cut off; instead, the top of the femur head is shaped to closely fit the underside of a metal cap which is placed over the head. A matching metal cup is then placed in the pelvis socket, replacing the patient's hip joint.

The advantage of hip resurfacing is reduced bone removal, reduced chance of hip dislocation and lower rates of leg length discrepancies.

Patient anatomy and surgeon discretion are factors in deciding who is a candidate for hip resurfacing. It is generally intended for younger patients without weight problems.
