Classes Aimed at Helping Mom and Her Support Group Before and After Childbirth

Preparing for Childbirth
Certified, experienced childbirth instructors will teach you and your support person ways to enhance your comfort and decision-making during your hospital stay.

The class covers the labor and delivery process, relaxation and pain management techniques for a healthy and comfortable birthing experience, physical and behavioral characteristics of your newborn, infant feeding choices, cord care and measures you can take to ensure your family’s health and safety.

Classes are held on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Sibling Class
How do you explain a new baby coming into your home? Come join the fun with other children to prepare your child for the arrival of their new brother or sister.

Classes are scheduled four times a year and are typically held on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The fee is $5 per family. For more information, call (920) 887-4007.




Baby’s First Massage
Newborn Massage is a hands-on, happy way to become acquainted with your baby. This class is for parents or caregivers and their healthy newborn up through the first 10 weeks of life. 

A 28-page booklet with illustrated massage strokes will be given at the class and is included in the fee. 

Those interested should bring a receiving blanket, a diaper bag with extra clothes, diapers, wipes, and formula if needed to each class. Please feed baby just prior to the class.

Classes will be held on Thursdays at 10 a.m. in the OB department on the 3rd floor of the hospital. Call (920) 887-4007 for more information or to register for this class.

The fee is $30 a couple per class or $40 for a one-on-one class per couple. The class is FREE to all who deliver at Beaver Dam Community Hospitals.




Prenatal and Postpartum Massage
This massage is a great way to nurture a mother-to-be or a new mother. 

Massage helps the mother to relax and relieves aches such as low back pain or tight muscles in the neck and shoulders. It can also help with edema (swelling) and leg pains.

Massage for expectant mothers is provided by a therapist who is certified in pre- and peri-natal massage. The cost for a massage is $35 for a 30-minute and $50 for a 60-minute massage. Gift certificates are available and make great gifts.

Massage is done at Beaver Dam Community Hospital in the Rehabilitation & Wellness Department, 803 S. University Ave., Beaver Dam. Call 887-4039 to schedule an appointment.



Breastfeeding Classes
Beaver Dam Community Hospital’s International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) shares information to help you and your baby get the best start for breastfeeding with a classes throughout the year on one Tuesday each month from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Learning Center on the third floor of BDCH.
 
Topics include benefits of breastfeeding, baby’s instinctive behaviors after birth, how to position and latch, what to expect during the early days and beyond, early skin to skin between mom and baby and its effect on breastfeeding, early breastfeeding challenges, what to do if your baby doesn’t latch and more.
 
Since all moms and babies are not the same, moms are given information and encouraged to do what works best for them, with ongoing support from BDCH staff.
