See Clearly Again

Ophthalmic surgery is performed on any part of the eye, and at Marshfield Medical Center-Beaver Dam, the ophthalmologists on the MMC-BD Medical Staff use advanced technology and surgical techniques for cataract removal, glaucoma, plastic surgery for eyelid repair, muscle surgery for crossed eyes and tear-duct probings to correct plugged tear duct infants.

Cataract surgery is the most common procedure, and with today’s cutting-edge techniques at MMC-BD, patients often enjoy the best vision of their lives after surgery.

A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens in the eye, which over time causes symptoms such as blurred vision and sensitivity to light. Cataracts are treated by surgically removing the clouded lens and replacing it with a clear intraocular lens implant (IOL).

This can be done comfortably under local anesthesia with the patient awake throughout the operation. The lens is inserted through a very small incision, avoiding the need for stitches and takes usually fewer than 30 minutes.

Our advanced procedures not only remove the cataract but can also correct astigmatism and near sightedness. If patients are interested in decreasing their need for glasses, they may qualify and elect to have a premium IOL placed in their eye at the time of cataract surgery.
